I'm a journalist and critic based in Washington, DC. My work has appeared in Slate, the New Yorker, the Atlantic, Smithsonian, and other other publications. I'm also the current host of Working, Slate's podcast about what people do all day. You can find past episodes here.
I currently work primarily on a freelance basis. I'm almost certainly available if you want me to write something.
I originally set this website up while grappling with a thyroid cancer diagnosis. My blog from that time, A Small Thing, is still up. Today, my personal writing mostly comes through my newsletter The Open, which you can sign up for here.
I hold a PhD in English from Cornell University, and I have taught at both Cornell and Georgetown, but I don't live that life anymore.
